High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

The Science

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) involves the use of an acoustic lens to concentrate multiple intersecting beams of ultrasound energy at an extremely precise temperature and depth within the Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System (SMAS), subcutaneous fat, and dermal layers. Each individual ultrasound beam passes through the dermis with little to no effect, however at the point where the beams converge (the focal point) their combined energy results in a thermal effect on the tissue. The body’s response to these micro thermal injuries within the dermis is to produce collagen and elastin.

The Plain Speak

HIFU treatment is unlike lasers, radio frequency or cosmetic surgery. It is non-invasive (the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, is not effected) and has no bruising, redness or downtime associated with it. HIFU penetrates the surface of the skin to deliver small bursts of energy within the dermal layer. These bursts cause micro injuries at precisely targeted depths, kicking into action the body’s natural wound healing respons. Within the dermal layer, this response is the production of collagen and ellastin, the two most important structural elements of youthful skin.

Results can be seen immediately after the procedure, with peak effect occurring between 3-6 months post treatment as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen.
